Taller WP Horse

Can a taller horse do WP? I'm talking 16.3 hands. Or is that when they transition to HUS?

Its not necessarily the height, but more along the lines of the build of the horse and the movement Is key...a tall horse can do WP. It all depends on training and natural movement.

Yes, it's more about their musculature and movement than anything about height. And preference--with the right training you can have most any horse do anything (within reason... heh)

There are tons of horses at that height and higher that do WP. As said above, it has more to do w/ the movement and athletic ability.

As the other posters stated, the particular horses' movement is what determines if it's suitable for WP or HUS, but height is in vogue right now. 16+hh WP horses are becoming the norm (IMO,) but they are being bred to maintain that slow, flowing, straight legged jog & lope. Unfortunately (IMO,) a nicely moving 15hh HUS horse might get lost in the ring of all those currently-trendy 17+hh ones.

He can, but if he is a bigger strided horse, he may spend a lot of time off the rail and passing, which is going to make him look like he is faster than a lot of the other horses in the pen.

Most horses that are that tall are normally more HUS-inclined. If he can truly jog and lope, then give it a whirl, but he may be better suited for a pattern class.

I've seen horses that tall doing western pleasure. It's common but it depends on movement and muscles.
