Want to start Western Pleasure Showing, Help

I moved my horse last week to barn that is just filled with activities. The have breed shows open shows, kids shows, gymkhanas and rodeos. I haven't really done much with Sienna in the last three years, a lot of ground work, a lot of grooming, or moseying her around for fresh grass, sometimes just sitting in her pasture watching her. I mean I have ridden her and she's quite ridable, but she's a Morab and can be 'hot.' I'd like to work with her this summer on her reining, sidepassing, things like that and maybe before the summer is over put her in a show or two. She'd actually make a good barrel horse or reining horse, is very quick and has a low center of gravity because of her build. I'm just not sure at my age if I want to do that stuff again.
She has a nice little jog when she gets over testing me and has worked on sidepassing in the past, etc. but she's a hot +lazy horse, LOL and when cantering likes to drop her inside shoulder and cut corners. My point is although I intend to work on all these things, I really don't want to start showing her because I want to win anything, or get caught up in the competition thing since I did that when I was younger. I just want to have fun and 'show' her off because I'm so proud of her and how good she is now compared to 3 years ago. I'd like to some in hand showing too but I've been away from all this for so long, I don't even know if they do that anymore except breed shows. Am I crazy? Does anyone else show for fun instead of competition?

I show for both. Mostly for fun though. I show in ARHA just to see how far my horse and I have come. I am sure there are in hand classes you can do with your horse. Ask your new barn and see if they have in hand classes.

Well I'm glad I'm not crazy, LOL (well I am but that's a different matter

I show for competition, but competition IS fun. The problem now being that a lot of people can't afford to show for "Fun" anymore.

That's one reason I want to do it for fun

That's one of the reasons I want to just go into it with fun in mind and not competition. I have learned a lot here at the forum, and one BIG thing I've learned is showing is EXPENSIVE. I am not going to pay $4,000 for a saddle, I don't care if Circle Y or whoever made it three times over I'm not buying an outfit to wear that cost more than my horse. I've been kinda putting ONE outfit together for myself over the last couple months and all of it is used. And the rest of it will be too. I'm making Sienna's matching breast collar out of her headstall reins because I changed to a bosal and mecate reins. Anything that's blinged up I'll be doing. If the judge chooses not to look at her or me because of that, she still had the experience of being in the arena with other horses, and distractions, and still trying to do her best. And I will too. I just remember the excitement I felt when I was younger, making sure my horse looked good, shoe polish on the hooves (telling my age now, LOL.) making sure anything white was BRIGHT white, manes and tails untangled, smooth and shiny. Not a speck of dirt on the coat. I think I remember that more than I do ME getting ready! I just plan to walk into a ring with a clean horse and clean tack and clean me, and ask Sienna to try her best, and I will too. I guess this all probably does sound silly, but I think it sounds like fun.

It's not silly ^_^

A lot of people now int he horse world are absolutely insane. This last year I went into the show ring in a bedazzled under armor long sleeve for a show shirt xDDD
    05-11-2011, 03:01 PM
Now that shirt I'd like to see, LOL. Seriously if you can post a pic. What kind of showing do you do sorrel and where? I'm assuming since this is the western pleasure board, LOL it COULD be western of some sorts, lol, but that covers a lot these days.

I'll see if I can dig it out when I get home for you ^_^ It was a last minute "Aww, crap...I can't find my show shirt....I can't find my show shirt....*Shifty eyes at her underarmor*.......*Looks at bedazzler* xD"

I don't show western pleasure as much anymore after a bit of an issue with one of my fillies, but now I show a lot of reining/cowhorse/cutting/barrel racing and equitation classes. Anywhere in Oregon.

Thanks, LOL I'd really like to see it. I bought a western embroidered jacket on ebay that has red and green in it, so I kept my red slinky to go under that, and I changed Sienna's headstall to the black one I bought to resell, and had it sold and realized the ferrules were pitting in places, so refunded the woman's money. I'm going to make her a breast collar to match out of the reins since I'm using a bosal and mecate reins now. Of course I put my handmade conchos on it instead of the ones that came with it, LOL. Do you really have to absolutely have on chaps when you show? I know black chaps would look good but man they make me hot just to think about them. I was thinking maybe just a black pair of jeans would get me by. I don't want to look silly when I go in, but I'm old now and like being comfortable, LOL. And a girl has a pair of plain black Justin boots on here I want to get if she still has them when I have the money. If not I'll find some, I'm good at ferreting out bargains, LOL. Staying home so much makes it easy I guess. Can't wait to see what you wore!!!

I wouldn't say chaps were required, but they look super flashy and are a nice thing to have. :)
