This is my thread for Dusty! Competition is a month away, and we have the walk/trot down like a pro. He is young, believe me, I know. I'm just getting him to where he can walk/trot/lope in a class A-OK, while putting a good foundation on him.
Any critique/tips would me much appreciated
I've put maybe 10 rides on him, I try to ride no more than 1-2 times a week, lunging every other day. He has a gorgeous, floaty trot and he keeps his head nice and level. He responds to "whoa", very nice. Infact, if I just roll my hips up he will slow down his trot. I squeeze my heels by his girth and he backs up with barely any rein pressure. He responds to all of his cues at the lope, but he seems out of his element then. He keeps his head a little higher and goes fairly fast. I've been working on gaining muscle on his hind end and it's improved his lope a whole bunch.
I ride him in just a smooth, o-ring snaffle. The actual mouth peice has a bit of a curve to it, but it's the only snaffle I could find in my barn that would fit him! I've also riden him in a bosal, and he worked pretty good with that. I'd prefer to do more with it, but I want to get Dusty a little bit farther a long before I do a whole bunch with it. If he's doing good by the time the show comes, I think I will use it.
Oh, and by the way, incase you didn't know, this is a ranch horse type show. Not a AQHA style pleasure class. The class is judged on effeciency and horses respond to rider cues. Not so much looks.
