I was wondering if anyone who rides western or does western events wears a helmet.....I planned on wearing one...since the last time I rode years ago I got thrown and bashed my head on a rock and was out about ten minutes and had to go to the hospital...besides few gashes and a really sore neck and head I was ok...but it seems all other events having to do with horses use helmets except westerns....

I usually try and wear my helmet because of all those horror stories you hear, but sometimes I do forget

I should wear one, but for any western event I you show (at least around here) you are required. I don't wear one, simply because I don't have one and I trust my horse, not saying that unexpected things could happen. I say wear one. Especially if your doing contesting

I wear one but I don't compete. I fell and got a concussion about a month ago so I always wear it. I feel more comfortable in it. None of the other western riders at my barn wear one and they all kind of roll their eyes at me but I don't really care what they think. If you are more comfortable, wear the helmet and ignore the comments you may get.

Until this year I have never worn one and have never had a problem. But now that I am going to be barrel racing next year I bought one and I love it. I only wear it when I am competeing or when I am training my young horse but that is because I like to live on the edge the rest of the time haha. I thought it would be uncomfortable and ugly but to be honest, it is more comfortable than my cowboy hat and it doesn't look as bad as I thought. I always thought when I was younger that people who rode western shouldn't wear helmets but my tune has changed. My theory now is, which is more important, my head or the way I look. I picked head.

I wear a troxel which looks english style. Its vented so its pretty cool and I got a discount because it had been scratched at the store ;) I hear great things about charles owens. I get all my helmet advice from english riders so I don't know if they have anything western looking

I bought an IRH All Terrain Helmet. I didn't really know what was the best brand but I have heard good things about IRH (my friend has one) and I liked the looks and price on this helmet so I got it.

I tend to always wear my helmet when I ride. That includes the few times I have shown western too.

I have the advantage of being an old and crusty person so I really do not care if others laugh at me wearing my helmet.

They do have some western helmets they are kind of costly for me right now and from what the reviews say they make your head look huge lol I will try this one and let you guys know how it feels and looks...I don't really care what people say either...just surprises me that when I go to the corrals...we have a public corrals system here you can rent spaces for your horse for 8 bucks a month....that no one wears a helmet even the little kids....and doing barrels and poles its pretty dangerous going those speeds....I feel safety should be first..lol
