Open Halter

Uhoh!! I entered in open halter thinking it was just conformation and it turns out it isn't. I have to do a pattern. Do they give you the pattern? Any tips for practicing like setting up? I'm so nervous!!

Halter is a conformation class. You enter the ring walking, and when you pass the judge, you trot into a line-up, and square up your horse for judgement. Basically, that's it. There should be a ring steward that will direct everyone.

Showmanship, however, is a pattern of leading, trotting, backing, turning, the works. Showmanship is very difficult, and can take months+ to train your horse properly.

Perhaps if you're curious, look up videos on youtube. Who's the organizer of the show? Call them up, ask what you signed up for, and ask for details of the class. What is required? Attire, what should your horse wear, what are you expected to do, what is the class being judged on?

there in the midst of sacred pollen hidden, all hidden he; how joyous his neigh

The way we do it around here is like showmanship but they judge the horse not you. The judge made us do a simple pattern so he could see the horse's movement.

Halter is easier then showmen ship. Well IMO it is. You are getting judges in showmenship and in halter it is your horse. If your horse squares up nicely and stands quiet you will do fine. I'm not sure if you will have to do this but a few judges have asked to see my horses teeth during the class. Just a heads up.

Good luck and have fun. Halter is one of my favorite classes.
