my horse isnt the best barrel racer but she likes to do it.shes a tn walker quarter horse mix mare.she does the wrong lead coming around the barrel.how do i correct this? also how can i get her to not drop her shoulder around the barrels?since shes a gaited cross she has a straight shoulder.how can that disadvantage her?

Jester doesn't change leads, and we still get epic times. But as for the shoulder I am not quite sure. I have had very little experience with any faired horses besides the Paso's and Peruvian's little swimming step.

Teach her to pick up the correct lead off of the pattern. Then apply it slowing to the barrels.

Shoulder wise? Work on suppling your horse. So many people focus on flexing and tend to forget that if you have the shoulders, you have control. Teach her to move off of the leg. Hip, ribcage, and shoulders. Counter arcing and side passing.

The bad effects of dropping her shoulder could affect her joints, make for a very rough turn, cause her to knock over barrels, cause her to slip or lose her balance, and not accurately set up for the next barrel. Her straight shoulder makes her stride shorter and choppier and added with the dropping of her shoulder, adding time to your runs.

I would be working on flying changes on the flat before anything..Try just putting one pole on the ground and canter towards it,give her the aids early if you will be going left or right straight after the pole, she will soon get the idear of it and it will help you and her with what aids you are showing her before the pole and hopefully she lands on the correct lead.I hope that makes sence?
