Shows.. help!?

I entered in some shows at a local fair that is in about a month.
Some things I would like to know:
1. In western pleasure, does someone yell out at us what to do, or is there a pattern?
2. In a trail class, do we normally get the pattern before the show, so we can memorize it?
3. I am entering in command class, trail and western pleasure and costume. Should I keep her mane natural? (her mane isn't long or thick to start, and it takes forever to grow. It doesn't go below her neck.)

4. When trailering her to the show (about 1 hour in trailer both ways), should she be wearing shipping boots or other protection? (I have no experience with trailering horses)

5. Where can I buy bright pink hoof polish!? LOL (for the costume contest)

Thanks so much for any tips or help regarding showing. Doesn't necessarily have to answer my questions, just general tips and advice for showing a horse. (I have never been in a horse show before.)

1) You will be told to walk, jog, lope, and halt around the arena on both the left (which you start on) and right rein. Your horse should look like a pleasure to ride... So safe and responsive your grandma could ride it. You should have a reasonably loose rein length depending on the horse.

2) Yes, they will post the pattern. Just go up to it and read it over and over again and look at the course. You can even take a pen and paper and take it back to the trailer...

3) I just keep it natural. Make sure it's smooth and there are no tangles.

4) I trailered 2 hours there and another 2 hours back and never used leg protection...

5) Your local tack shop.

Have fun, and get there early... I hate getting to a show and having to rush, so get there early enough to make mistakes and take your time.

Oh, and Smile while your showing!

1. In western pleasure, does someone yell out at us what to do, or is there a pattern?
All western pleasure work is on the rail. The annoucer will tell the class weather to walk , jog or lope and then in what or to transition for example- you will be asked to jog(usaully once around the ring) then asked to jog. After you are done the class they will ask you to come to the centre of the ring and and back and recieve ribbons.
2. In a trail class, do we normally get the pattern before the show, so we can memorize it?

There should be a pattern posted 1 hour prior to the class.
3. I am entering in command class, trail and western pleasure and costume. Should I keep her mane natural? (her mane isn't long or thick to start, and it takes forever to grow. It doesn't go below her neck.)

Just go with au natraul...

4. When trailering her to the show (about 1 hour in trailer both ways), should she be wearing shipping boots or other protection? (I have no experience with trailering horses)

I would use shipping boots just in case. It doesnt hurt!

5. Where can I buy bright pink hoof polish!? LOL (for the costume contest)

Local tack stores should have some. You in Kelowna right? Check Diamond H tack.

Live to ride. Ride to live.

Thanks for the replies guys :) They helped a lot!

JumperStride: That stuff is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I will be ordering that soon One question though.. I have one show the day after the costume class, is the polish easy to remove?
Thanks so much!

Tasia: I checked Diamond H, they didnt have any. Thanks

EDIT: I was reading the hoof polish site, and it says they only ship inside the USA :(

I would check some Equne tack supplier websites/catologs for the hoof polish.
They may be able to ship it to you through the company, not directly from the product maker.

Good luck!

Nope. Not at all. They ask for back, jog, lope, walk.
2. In a trail class, do we normally get the pattern before the show, so we can memorize it?
Not a day before the show but its posted on that day early morning
3. I am entering in command class, trail and western pleasure and costume. Should I keep her mane natural? (her mane isn't long or thick to start, and it takes forever to grow. It doesn't go below her neck.)
BAND the mane

4. When trailering her to the show (about 1 hour in trailer both ways), should she be wearing shipping boots or other protection? (I have no experience with trailering horses)
Hahah doesnt hurt

5. Where can I buy bright pink hoof polish!? LOL (for the costume contest)

Thank You! I will check some sites for the hoof polish, then check a couple more tack stores to see if they have some.
I also read an article on how to make your own hoof polish. Buy sparkles and add them into a clear hoof oil bottle, shake it up, and it`s supposed to be similar. I will have to try that out and see if it works or not.

If you can not find pink hoof polish look for a pair of pink bell boots.

If you are going to leave your mane natural make sure it is neat and tidy. I would suggest trying to get it all a similar length, as that will make it look neater.
I personally prefer bands or braids.

Thanks AB :) I might be able to band her mane at the length it is.. here is her mane:

And

Maybe I should trim it a bit more, so it is thicker, so the bands look better?
The only problem with trimming her mane, is that it doesn`t grow.. takes about two months just to grow and inch or so.

Is there any natural ways to get a mane and tail to grow faster?

And here is her skimpy tail from about 7months ago when I first got her.. its pretty much the same length:

Thanks!
