Summer fun?

This summer my family has agreed to let me lease a horse from a local stable. I'll receive one on one riding lessons every day, and a helping hand will always be ready, but other than that, I am on my own.
Does anyone who have experience with horses or has leased a horse in the past have any advice for me? I've ridden English in the past, but my main focus is Western, in which I've been riding for the past four years on a regular basis. I'm not a beginner, but I haven't reached advanced yet.
I always find it easiest to set goals for myself, so this summer I'd like to:
1) Gallop
2) Build a strong relationship with my horse (before galloping)
3) Compete

I'd like tips/advice on what to expect, how to prepare, and what sort of things to do in the beginning stages of leasing a horse.
Thanks :)

Make sure that you know exactly what the terms and conditions of the lease are. Get all the information in writing where both you and the other person sign it. There should be good understanding between both of you as to what the lease actually means.

And have fun! This sounds like such an amazing oppourtunity! Lessons everyday ... I'm so jealous. :-p Don't be afraid of new challenges.
