I know many.people have a bit they only use when doing barrels. What is a mild bit that is a tiney bit more than a plain.snaffle?

Find something that has a short shank and a similar mouthpiece to what your snaffle has. Keeping the mouthpiece the same helps make the transition easier for your horse.

One of my favorite "step up" bits is a Jr. Cowhorse like this one. (I actually currently run my horse in this)

It is not enough to know how to ride; one must know how to fall.

Hi!!! I would love to get into barrel racing, but there are no trainers in my area. I also don't know anyone who has barrel raced. No idea how to train a horse to barrel race:( no idea how to get myself started, but would love to learn! I currently have an arabian gelding (I know, not a good horse for barrel racing) going to be trading him in for something else in the spring (something I can barrel race with) advice on what breed of horse? I was thinking qh.... let me know what you think!

Oh, I'm also new to this site. Just made my account a couple minutes ago, learning how it works.

Quarter horses are the dominating breed, followed by stock type paints and appaloosas (Which both are bred with a lot of QH in them typically anyway, just happen to have a gene for color) and following that would probably be a thoroughbred, which I am not a fan of.

I would look into your local clubs and see if there is anyone around who would be willing to help you, even if it is just a local competitor instead of a real trainer they could help you get started at least and maybe put you in contact with someone you could take lessons from.

Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.

Thanks for the advice! I've been looking real hard.. found a couple people but they don't have any lesson horses, so I was looking for an older experienced barrel horse that I could learn on and doesn't cost a lot..... no luck..

Great thread!

I used this one yesterday and it was awesome. It even got by the firewall here at work and looked great doing so.

National Finals Rodeo 2017 Live Stream - NFR on CBSSN

You have to click on a blue highlighted link then streams for NFR games will show up then select the game you want and it will show a whole bunch of streams to pick and choose from and like I said, it looked great.
