Smile 2019 National Drive Spring Edition

Hi all, I don't really post here much but have been a member for a long time. I've always wanted to get into driving and have been for the last year. I'll be attending the Spring (and hopefully fall!) National Drive this year. I was hoping to see if anyone else is going and if we could plan to meet, I will be going by myself so would really like some company and guidance on my first big outing.

I will be bringing my Miniature Horse, Maybelle, to drive, and my Mustang, Magnolia, to ride and maybe ground drive some as she is in training to be driven.

Yes! Its in Edinburg. I'm only an hour and a half south of it. I've heard a lot of people have been really happy that it is back in Indiana. It was last year as well, the Hoosier Horse Park.

You donít live too far from me, then! Iím in BG....

It must be really peaceful there....compared to the Horse Park with 3 different championship shows going on at the same time!!

I do love going to Lexington, though. I loved doing the big vet tours, and race horse farm tours....

I have never been to Hoosier, but from the photos it looks like a lot of fun! I do really love Lexington, but I'm not sure I would like the business while trying to do something new. I am only about two hours from you I think. I am just outside of Scottsburg, IN.

The Spring ND is a great place to start! It is WAY less distracting than the Fall one, even at KYHP. I did not realize Hoosier was that far from me. Itís the same as Lexington!

You are not far at all! Are you training the bay horse yourself, or is he(she) at a trainer?

I have done all the training myself so far, but I have an experienced friend (my equine dentist) that is going to help me hitch her the first couple times. She is doing well so far, but I want to ground drive her more before we do hitch her. This winter has been so sloppy I haven't done much since the fall, but I did get her harness in. I am not going to buy her a cart until we've driven her and make sure it goes well.

My biggest issue with her is that she likes to turn to look at me sometimes. She has pulled a travois and been led with me pulling the mini's cart walk/trot and did well.

She's such a sweetie. IME they get over the wanting to look behind for you. Use your reins to straighten her head and your voice to reassure her you are there.
