Talking Happy Thanksgiving holiday!: Sleigh driving question.

Good morning the day after Turkey Day? Are you stuffed like big bird fresh out of the oven?

Who here has literally gone over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house on a one-horse open sleigh pulled by a dapple-gray?

How many family members can one-horse open sleigh pull anyway?

What kind of horses are generally used for sleigh work in America?

Do they really have sleigh bells?

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandmother's house we go;
the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river, and through the wood—
oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
as over the ground we go.

Over the river, and through the wood,
trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground like a hunting hound!
For 'tis Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river, and through the wood—
now Grandmother's house I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

A Robert Frost Sleigh Ride Poem

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Mine wear bells when ever they are dressed/harnessed up for the holidays. No snow here for true sleighs on runners but when I lived up north sleigh rides were a much anticipated and lived treat.

So through the wood, yes. Over the river, yes. Never to grandma's though. Driven my share of dappled grays but my horse of choice comes in sorrel preferably with flaxen. Where I live I jokingly change the poem to under the river and over the woods...to grandmother's house we go. Via tunnels under the waterways and bridges over the basin.

The line of the song corrected from:

now Grandmother's house I spy!

to

now Grandmother's FACE I spy!

I prefer a horse of another color too: black.

Here's a super black jingle horse!

How does one (human sleigh occupant) not freeze to death on an open sleigh?

Oh and add a heavy layer of thick lotion or a balaclava over the face.
