The best equestrian team for you?

Its begining to become crunch time. im starting to make videos for eq. college teams, but i dont know what the right team for me is. Iv heard IHSA is equestation and hunter and NCAA is more of a "big school" type of thing. Im a past equitation rider but im in love with jumpers. I like small schools but love competition. Anyone have any stories or information of what they learned from theyre colloge experiance? Im also looking for a college that has a really nice equestrian buisness management. Any input would be great! thanks :)

Subbing! I'm planning on trying out for an NCAA team, so I'd love to hear any advice people have about riding at school as well :)

I, too, would love to hear opinions. My college has a fairly nice ISHA equestrian team...didn't even realize there might be a NCAA team as well.

I'm currently trying to decide whether to try out for the equestrian team or to try and find a private barn nearby.

There aren't many NCAA schools for equestrian. Something like 18 across the country, and mostly in the Texas area. Like I'm from Maryland, but I'm looking at Auburn University in Alabama; it's the closest school to me that is decent academically.

ahh, that makes sense. I know that my future college, Michigan State, has a nice equestrian team (MSU also breeds Arabians!) but I'm still on the fence about joining it.

PS - one of my good friends will be going to Auburn in the fall! :)

Oh, let me know how they like it! Everyone I've talked to said it's a fantastic school. I'm going to an NCAA riding camp there in July to see how I like it and also get a feel for the whole riding team thing. It seems like I'd love it there, I'm just concerned that I won't like being so far away. It's a 14 hour drive. :/

Have you considered Virginia Tech? They have a really fabulous Animal Science program, a good riding team, and beautiful campus.

The 4 years i spent there were some of the 4 best years of my life.

I went to college not knowing there was even a such thing as IHSA or NCAA riding. Didn't take me long to find out my college offered riding for credit, though, and once they saw me ride they recruited me to be on the IHSA team. It was SOOOO much fun. It was the highlight of college for me. My team was like a sorority would have been - made a ton of friends, learned a lot, had a blast. I highly recommend it to anyone.

You are correct - IHSA is hunter equitation (the western side is western pleasure and reining). Don't let it turn you off if hunters or eq isn't your thing - it's just fun to be on a team. We had people with eventing, dressage, even saddleseat backgrounds join our team.

Exactly Acco! I had a blast on my IHSA team in college. The experience was amazing, I made life-long friends and learned so much about horsemanship, riding and training. I don't think there's anything else quite as uniquely challenging as trying to figure out a new horse while you're in the show ring being judged. I would recommend it to anyone.

As far as schools go I know MTSU (TN) and Murray State (KY) both have good horse programs. I hear Virginia Intermont is really good too. The lady I used to take lessons from went there and she really liked it.
