What makes a good eventing horse

This is something I have always wanted to know but what type of build or conformation makes a horse a great eventing horse?

Now can any horse that has good conformation and good ability to jump do it? I mean I know all horses can jump but what are they looking for shows and stuff? I know a lot when it comes to the care of horses like injuries and how to take care of them and I can train trail horses but I have never done anything like this so I am curious. Plus it has always been a dream of mine to show horses professionally or just go to a few shows and stuff.

If you're talking about an upper level event horse, you'll usually see horses of a thoroughbred type. I was at Rolex this past weekend and all the horses I saw go were warmbloods or thoroughbreds. The warmbloods that are successful in eventing usually have a lot of "blood", meaning they have quite a lot of thoroughbred in their lineage.

It's vital that an event horse will stay sound, so straight legs, adequate bone and overall uphill balance are conformation traits you'll see in all UL event horses. The horses also must have a great gallop, a safe efficient jump and good enough movement to be competitive in the dressage phase. The final ingredient that a UL event horse has to have is a desire to do the job. A horse can have all the physical attributes, but without heart, it won't be an upper level horse.

If you're interested in what the judges are looking for in other jumping sports, like jumpers, or hunters or equitation, you may want to start another thread asking about those disciplines as well. :)
