Windows 10 Update

Remember when Windows was offering 10 as a free update with the option of returning to current?

I did and as 10 turned out to be a bit of a data hog for my limited usage at the time I reverted back to 7.

With my now limited discretionary $ I've been dreading to use it on Windows 10 rather than other stuff I'd like also.

And as you may know Windows has been all over the place recommending that people just by a new computer with W10 installed rather than update their old computer. I mean really insistent. Hmmmm...

Guess what? I downloaded and installed W10 this morning. Went off without a hitch. Saved programs and desktop just as when it was originally installed way back when.

No license, no key, no $$ needed.

Only thing I can figure is that when they made the original installation reversible, it was made reversible both ways. If I had waited until after January 14th I may have lost the option. I'll never know.

If I had purchased a CD or a new computer, I would never have known this.

It was one of those, "I wonder what will happen?" thingies.

The only issue I had was that you had to have Windows 7 or later or you couldn't do the upgrade. Since I don't use a lot of programs and such, I was still perfectly happy with Windows Vista. So I chugged along with my old computer until it died an ugly death and then went out and bought a new computer with Windows 10 on it. It's fine but I don't see a huge improvement from Vista, merely because what I do doesn't need the super zoomiest, newest thing. It did dump a lot of my old, working fine things that are no longer supported. That irritated me.

You can get Win10 without a license, it's considered an unverified version and locks you out of certain features.

I've always installed pirated version of Windows, so when I was upgraded to Win10 it was an 'unverified' version. I haven't ran into anything that would make me consider getting a license. The limitations are primarily cosmetic from what I've seen. If I ever ran into an issue, I'd sooner install Linux instead.

I was on XP way back when my puter died and the only thing that was available at Tucson where I was located at the time had W-7 which I grew to like except, year, there were some things I'd like to have saved from XP.

I had, and still have instructions on how to get a verified W-10 through a fully legal process free. I was planning to try it but decided to just try downloading and see what happened.

I'm typing on it right now. It even saved my login password.

So thought I'd share in case there are others that got the free version and went back to the one they had.

I just read about this yesterday - apparently they will no longer support Windows 7 in a few days:

Yep. January 14, 2020. No more updates. That date was announced quite a while back.
