Clydesdale x Akhel Teke

My barn just got a new horse. She is a pure Clydesdale and is in foal to an Akhel Teke, or so I have been told. I guess I am a cautious person by nature, but this seems like a really weird breeding to me. What if you ended up with a horse with the heft of the Clydesdale but the bones of the Akhel Teke? Or an Akhel Teke body but a Clydesdale neck? To me, it seems like the more different the breeds, the more likely you are to get a bad cross.

Has anyone ever heard of a horse with this breeding? I know we had a thread about unusual crosses last year. But this just seems super weird to me. I'm not a breeder, though, so what do I know.

I will say... If everything goes perfectly, it could be a spectacular foal.

Yeah, I also want to know right now what it will look like. They made it sound like she was just bred, so I guess next spring.

LOL sorry to lure people to this thread under false pretenses...

Hmm...My gut says 'I doubt it'.

But, it could be an interesting cross. Apparently Akhal-Tekes are a choice for colored-sport horse breeders, and are athletic. Maybe they would bring the benefits that TB's do when crossed with Drafts? I'm not sure.

But based on the four stud listings on StallionsNow, all for $750 of less, I'm skeptical that the horse was bred to a quality stud. Seems much like a phase of breeding horses to Arabian stallions that have belly spots and high white...Not because of the quality of horse, but because of the color.

I did stumble upon this guys ad for frozen semen shipped from the UK at the price of $1,800...he seems like a pretty fancy, talented guy, worthy of being bred too. Our Horses - Sweet Water Farm Akhal-Teke

I think if it were a quality Clydesdale, with more of a rideable conformation, crossed with a quality sport Akhal Teke, I bet it could come out with one heck of a sporthorse...But a Clydesdale built clearly for driving crossed with a backyard Akhal Teke stud...I bet something very 'meh' could result.

I believe that farm is on San Juan Island, near Friday Harbor, in the state of Washinginton, USA.

Our Horses - Sweet Water Farm Akhal-Teke

I went there to visit once. It is a gorgeous property with a lovely herd of these special horses. I met the resident stud. I think they have two, and provide frozen semen, too. Not sure.
But, the stud was so friendly, and I have NEVER met more intelligent and curious and confident horses in my life.

I was IN LOVE!!

Tin is an interesting cross for sure!

Personally I think that it could well be a great foal

Breeding from heavy horses can result in horses with plenty of bone, depth of body and good movement. The old saying is 'blood to bone' using the draft horse as the dam.

Many of the top show horses in the U.K. have been draft crosses, certainly many heavyweight hunters are this cross. More athletic horses have been from the breeding of the first cross back to a blood horse, getting more refinement without loosing the depth and bone.

Personally not a fan of the Akhal-Tek, they look to narrow for my liking.

Just found a pic of a Clyde-Teke filly from a place called Spring Hollow Farm. Would be interesting to see how she looks as an adult. They were hoping to get something that would make a good field hunter. Would be interesting to see photos of her all grown up! Too hard to tell at this age.

I was intrigued ....
Loved the pictures shared of another similar cross of Clyde to Akhel.

That head is just awful on that body currently.
Someone needs to do a lot of growing to fit that head is my opinion...
The rest of the animal is not bad...going to be big is a understatement when fully matured!!
But the head is so common...ugh!

Now, that halter also leaves a lot to be desired in fit...
I'm hoping these pictures were not being used to present a baby for sale...
Halter just wrecked the asked for price to be paid...yup that much to me it can defeat the look.
Pass, move on...

@SteadyOn thank you so much for posting those pictures! That is certainly an interesting looking filly. I guess it's hard to tell, at that age, how she will look when she grows up. She looks somewhat mis-proportioned to me.
