Mares is tricky critters

Doll Face aka Dolly's Red Galaxy aka Dolly By Golly is a tricky mare to breed. Not that she's hard to get in foal, the one time I've bred her she got in foal easily enough. What is tricky is A) she only shows heat for a very few days and B) once she's been bred and you try to preg check her, she "hides" the embryo.

Case in point:
Bred May 15, 2017
Preg ck: May 30, checked open but with lots of edema (so should come back into heat soon), no sign of a follicle
Preg ck: Jun3 6, open, no edema
Preg ck: July 6, in foal 52 day embryo, heart beat strong
Foaled: April 29, 2018, 348 days

This year:
Bred May 24 & 26
Preg ck: June 11, day 16, checked open, lots of edema (so should be ready to come back into heat), no sign of a follicle

We'll stall her next to Skippy for the next 5 days and see if she shows any signs at all of coming back in. According to my tease sheets, she should be on day 21 of her cycle, so if she's coming back in, it should be any minute now.

Scheduled another preg chk for June 24.

Starting to sound familiar? Any bets?

I can certainly HOPE! I'm hoping for a buckskin but a palomino will do just fine. Could be either one, she's not homozygous for black.

You know I am always drooling over your foals - but a buckskin may convince me I need a trotting horse

It'll be a full QH and double registered at the very least. Dolly is a little TANK of a mare and her foal (a colt) is a super stocky, tanky little fellow, 2 years old this year. Boudreaux, very sweet, people friendly and totally started under saddle already and just like the rest of Skippy's foals, not scared of anything. If I get another palomino colt, probably name him Curious Jorge.

OK, I have bred & colt. Sorrel isn't a possibility, sire is cremello. Our choices on that are Palomino 50%, Buckskin 37.5% and Smokey Black 12.5%. The smokey black is only a possibility because I've never tested Dolly's agouti status, I know she has at least 1, don't know if she's homozygous. I may send that test off just for fun. Skippy doesn't carry agouti at all.

So, what I know about the parent's colors:

Skippy eeaaCrCr, no testable white patterns at the time I tested him, though he has a small blaze and a couple of sox.

Dolly EeA?, no color testing has been done on her, she has a star and 4 white sox with ermine spots.

Dolly is a little short tank of a mare, about 14.1 and wears a size 80 blanket when she's not in foal.

Skippy is a bigger tank, about 15.2 and he wears an 82 when he's in pasture condition. So any foal is guaranteed to be a little fireplug, usually gets taller than mom but shorter than dad from these 2.
