He went from a tan color to this. Hes 6 months old. Im thinking a type of roan sabino? Father is either bay or chestnut (theyre not sure which of the two is the sire) and mother is a sabino. Small black face markings. Hes quite handsome and i love his color but what is it?

I can't tell if those are black tips on the back of his ears or not. Sabino surely. I'm going with sorrel until better photos of ear backs and if you have need born pics that would help.

Who has black face markings? First foal shed is the darkest and some sorrel can look dark enough that they can be mistaken for black. With the red body though he would not have black on the face.

Some horse people change their horse, they change their tack and discipline, they change their instructor; they never change themselves.

I think he looks like he's going to be a black with sabino.

At that age the coat has faded and is sunburnt. Makes actual color really hard to tell.

Color of parent does not always rule out color of foal. It all depends on the genetics actually involved. Knowing the parents parents colors can help.

Two black parents can have a red baby but not bay. Two reds can only have red but a red and black could have red, black or bay. Same with bay and black or bay and red. The color you see only tells you part of the genetics for sure.

I am still seeing red but that could just be the lighting and quality of the photos. I see dark ears but not black tips and I don't see black in the tail.

I don't know, but he's cute! I hope that you post more pictures in a few months when his winter coat comes in. I'm really curious now what color he is / will be.

So no new born, hours old photos in good light with no shadows?
