I've found a human hairbrush, the widely spaced type with little knobbles at the end of each bristle/pin, works extremely well, and the horses like the sensation of the knobbles on the skin and want me to do the top thoroughly for that reason...

I like to brush my horses' hair as long as there is a detangler in it. Personally, I don't like most detanglers you get at the store and I recently started to use Garnier Fructis leave-In conditioner along with their argan oil (I think they call it anti-frizz serum) mixed with water. It's very easy to get the tangles out and I find very little hair in the brush afterwards.
