Unless you want that tail to be show-length dragging and kept in a tail bag....

I trim my horses tail after fully brushing it out by carefully trimming it to the bottom of the ankle/fetlock joint with them standing perfectly still. They then should not step back on it nor it be to short when they arch their tail some when walking as all do.
If you want the tail to look fuller and make the horses butt fuller cut it square.
Otherwise a tapered cut works fine.
I actually pull just the very longest hairs at the very bottom, not allowing them to pull our the entire length of the tail hair only about 2-3" out when shortening....honestly, cutting it is easier...but I love a full tail look.!!

I personally think it depends on the breed. Some breeds suit a long, full and natural tail, whereas others not so much. You may need to check breed standards as well - natives for example shouldn't be squared off. Then again, it's your choice and if you aren't showing it shouldn't matter :)
