My horse has a long mane and tail, too. I like it long, so I don't cut it for shows. I usually do a running braid like this (not my pic; it's from Google):

For the tail, I usually just trim the bottom so it's even, about pastern length.

Not sure about the braids but in regards to keeping her white, there is a shampoo called Quick Silver that does an excellent job!

Her tail is beautiful, so I would just give it quick snip straight across the bottom at about fetlock length.

As for the mane, I would cut it. I really don't like long manes with the exception of a few breeds, so I would definitely cut that one.

Mane can go loose for XC, and jumpers. Hunters, if it's a recognized rated show or bigger, then do hunter braids. Other wise, I leave manes loose as well if it's just a small hunter show.

Dressage, either little plaits, or the button braids. I always plait the tail as well.

i agree just give her tail a straight across trim and the mane just do a running braid. I personally prefer the longer manes though so just my thought

I really like long manes too, and this running braid is beautiful! I may try that on my horse!

A little off topic, but I have seen mane pulling, and I dont get how pulling the mane (by the description of how to do it) makes it shorter and even... It just sounds like it would make it thinner... I didnt know you could cut a mane (with the exception of cutting it short and making ur horse a temp. zebra)...

If you are just planning to dabble in dressage and do schooling shows, you are fine to leave her mane and tail long and do a running braid. However, if you'd like to get more serious (if you're considering rated shows), it is traditional to bang the tail to about midway between hock and fetlock (there's some wiggle room in length, but it definitely needs to be above the fetlock) and pull the mane for button braids.

Pulling a mane does both jobs of thinning and shortening. It shortens because you pull the longer hairs out to leave just the shorter ones.
