Blindness?

If there anyway to help prevent further blindness issues from occuring. The horse that I ride came from an abusive situation a while back, my friend brought him back to health. Anyway he had a piece of metal stuck in his eye which was never taken out by a vet while his old owners had him. The metal piece fell out very very shortly after my friend got him but ever since he has suffered from some blindness in that eye which is understandable.

He is also 20 years old and has been slowly getting worse. He isn't horrible and during the day he is perfectly fine. But once it starts to get dark, around dusk time he doesn't see very well and will sometimes shy at things. The other night he could even find his grain bucket because it was pitch black outside.

Is there anything that can help with that, like supplements or anything?

you absolutely would need a vet and possibly even an ophthomologist's opinion on this to know what the future holds for this horse. I have known many one eyed horses who have done great even in jumping, but if there is partial vision left in the eye it can make them more spooky and dangerous. Best to have a vet out for a look to tell you more! Good luck!
