And how old, tall, breed, and work load does your horse do?

13, 16hh, QH, light riding once every two weeks. 3/4 of a small bale, and a scoop of oats/sweet feed, a pinch of biotin, and joint supplements.

4, 16.2hh, paint, in training. 3/4 small bale, plus a scoop of oats and sweet feed and a pinch of biotin.

3, 14.3hh, paint, putting miles on. 3/4 of a small bale and a few handfuls of oats, a pinch of biotin and maybe a claming supplement soon

Welcome to the forum! =D
What a fun question! ALL my horses are in light work/training at present. THIS will change as we prepare for our great, family trail ride in SD next summer!! WOOHOO!!

5, 16"3hh KMHSA gelding, eats about 45-55 pounds of alfalfa or alfalfa/grass hay daily, 2 feedings/day/stall, 1 lb/oats in the morning, 3lb 10% sweet feed at night, NO hay when in pasture

5, 15"2hh QH gelding, eats about 45 pounds of alfalfa or alfalfa/grass hay daily, 2 feedings/day/stall, 1 lb/oats in the morning, 3lb 10% sweet feed at night, NO hay when in pasture, just glorious, free-choice grazing!

13, 15"1hh KMHSA mare, eats about 45 pounds of alfalfa or alfalfa/grass hay daily, 2 feedings/day/stall, 1 lb/oats in the morning, 3lb 10% sweet feed at night, NO hay when in pasture

All 3 are fed together when turned out. Each has a rubber bucket, buckets are separated by 12-15 ft., I feed grain on the other side of the fence, lol, and my 5yo KMHSA, who needs more calories is also the herd leader, so he isn't losing any weight from any other bullies.

Remember to measure hay by pounds, not just flakes
The average guide is 1 lb hay/100 lbs horse

12 years old, 14.3hh paint gelding. At the moment, light riding a couple of times a week. He gets a scoop (1 litre jug) of relax (a mixture of rolled barley, black sunflower, sunflower oil, wheaten chaff, lucerne chaff, supplemented with a balanced vitamin/mineral pre-mix and pellets, blended with molasses.) and 1-2 scoops of lucern/oaten chaff mix. He usually also gets 3 table spoons of biotin but they were out of stock last time i needed to at the moment he is getting 2 table spoons of polished which has biotin and other stuff in it.

27 years old, 15.1hh Qh/ASH cross. currently lightly ridden maybe once a week (give or take). He gets half a scoop of relax, half a scoop of gumnuts and 1 scoop of lucern/oaten chaff mix.

They both also have 24/7 pasture which there is ALOT of :D

1/2 pound shredded beet pulp (unsoaked) maybe a bit more

6yo miniature mare, 37", she doesn't really get fed as such she doesn't need it, but every now and again she gets a few handfuls of meadow hay chaff.
Oh and she's never really in work, just gives the occaisional ride to my 7yo sister :)

Mitch, 7yo, 16.1hh, light daily work at the moment (focusing more on weight gain), 1kg of dunstans extruded barley(= 3 scoops), 0.5kg meadow hay chaff(more of a filler really), 1.5 scoops of equilibrium B1 cool mix, 1 tsp placide-m(magnesium)
am feed is generally 3 scoops of soaked palm kernel (he needs lots of fibre otherwise he gets diarheoa) and he is strip fed in his paddock so he gets more grass each morning too... Not a particularly easy keeper unfortunately

8 years old, 15.2hh and around 1200lb Paint mare. Light to moderate riding 2-3x a week.
4lbs sweet feed total daily
Daily dose of SmartCalm
Daily dose of Ugard

She is outside 24/7 and was on just pasture until recently. She now gets about one laege flake of grass hay. Probably 30 or so pounds. Maybe more if the BO gives her more if it'll be colder.

14 months 13.3hh (and growing) Appendix QH 5lbs of a 14% grain twice a day with Source at night. I'd put her weight about 550lbs. She is in light, in hand work about 3 days a week (when the weather cooperates)

15 months 13.2hh (and growing) QH 4lbs of 14% grain twice a day with Source at night. She is about 600lbs. We are getting halter broke ;) so I barely call it work.

They have a round bale of fescue in the pasture where they are turned out all day, plus getting a forkful at night in the stall.

Epona, 10 yr. old Belgian Draft, 16 hands, approx 2,000 lbs: NO grain, 1 scoop Platform Hoof supplement, Easy Keeper supplement from SmartPak, and free choice Timothy hay. She is fat also. She is in light to moderately light work....ridden as a trail/pleasure horse.

Hmm, in my pasture, there are horses ranging in age from 1 to about 18 of all breeds; mustang, percheron, belgian, quarter horse, mule, donkey, etc. They all get free choice grass hay 24/7 and free choice white salt block. Will also be getting them some loose minerals for this winter. For right now, they are on a maintenance diet because none of them are in any kind of work at all (many are retired).

My customer horses are fed straight alfalfa hay morning and night and nothing else. I don't weigh how much they get because I adjust it every day according to how they finished their previous meal, how they are looking, and what level of work they are in. During the first few weeks of training, they get fed more because they are in a heavy work load, during the finishing work, they generally get fed less because they usually average a moderate work load.

looks like you have a lot to read, but here's my input!! :)

Rains - Shes 12yrs, 13.1hh, Quarter Pony cross, and she is a full on barrel racer and pole bender, also mounted games. :)
She gets fed 1 scoop (2L) of chaff, 1/2 scoop of pony pellets, 1-3 hand fulls of rolled barley, 1 very small cup of sunflower seeds, would be about 1/4 of a 'normal' cup, and 1 multivitamin, 1 vitamin E and one Vitamin B.

Bob - His 6yrs, 8hh, Shetland, his a trick performer and soon to be a carriage puller! :) He gets fed 1/2 scoop (2L) of chaff, a handful of pellets and a small handful of sunflower seeds. and half a Multivitamin.

Mim - shes 4.5yrs, 16hh, TB WB cross, Eventer! And she gets fed 2 scoops of chaff, 1 scoop of pony pellets, 1 scoop of rolled barley, 1 'cup' of sunflower seeds, 2 Multivitamins, 1 Vitamin E, and 1 Vitamin B!!

All horses are on unlimited grassy/oaten hay, with some lucerne, as there is like no grass. :D:D

Duffy- 18.1hh, in moderate work (dressage/flatwork training 6 days a week, lunge once a week) 6YO. Still trying to build her weight up, so she's on a fair bit!

1 and 1/2 big, big scoops of oats/barley three times a day
Haylage/oat straw ad lib.

Oh and carrots and apples of course ;) Might start a mineral supplement for just wellbeing!

please advise...the barn where I board does not weigh their hay, 15.3 TB mare gets 3 flakes 2X daily, plus pasture and 1 scoop carb guard 2x day. She is in good flesh and has not lost weight..should I worry that the hay is not being weighed. Also, she is starting to get a bit cranky in season, she has not been so far, is that normal for the Fall. I have only had 'Jody' about 7 weeks.

I wouldn't worry about the hay, if she looks good and isn't acting starved. As for cranky in season, I have mares who are just plain witchy in season, some are snugglers in season others are practically unchanged in season. They're just like people in that regard, and one time might be rough and the next 3 not and so on.

Chip - 6 yr old QH (pleasure bred), 14.3 hh.
Nick - 9 yr old QH (ranch bred) 15 hh

Both have
- free access to fresh water year round with some ACV in it
- half bale of good grass hay per day split into two feedings
- 3 acre pasture to browse around in
- pail of soaked beet pulp in the evening with Hoffman's horse mineral in it
- free access to salt

Rowan is 8 and ridden 6 days a week. He travels a lot to clinics and competitions and is trained and schooled at a high level of Dressage almost every day. He gets fed high quality grass, fescue and alfalfa mix hay 4 times a day and spread out over two feedings, about 2.5 to 3 pounds of ration balancer, a half cup of oats and an extra biotin supplement and free access to water. And that's it! Because he works so hard I need him to be lean and not carrying any excess weight on his hard working joints, this along with ample turnout and regular vet check ups is personally what I believe keeps him sound. I like him at a 5 all year round as putting weight on him is very easy should he need it.

Thank you Dreamcatcher...you answered my questions and relieved my mind! I am a new horse owner and thought I had found my dream mare when I was told her seasons were insignficant...then these last few days she has been 'snuggling' up to a 35 yo gelding (who could not care less) and having a discharge. For the first time yesterday, she walked AWAY from me when I went to catch her, usually she sees me coming and walks toward me...all happy...not so much yesterday! My trainer did not even want to ride her, said she was not in the mood for a fight. Do you give your mares a few days off when they are having a hard time?

19 yr old Foundation QH, buckskin
15.3hh,

workload: ridden 5-6 times a week and then a day of rest (turned out as long as possible EVERYDAY currently 24/7 on NICE pasture.)

when on quality free choice grass pasture; NO grain! (he stays a perfect weight)

when on limited pasture or in stall: FREE CHOICE quality grass hay and 2lbs TC lite with fresh ground flax seed and vitamin E capsules.

workload is generally the same for all seasons.

i'm an advocate for free choice hay, as much Turnout as possible in MOST conditions (except extremely icy).

photo taken this summer (both of us were a bit unbalanced and pulling in this pic but i still like it!) he still has spunk LOL

12 yr old, 15.2 hh Paint gelding about 1100-1200 lbs. Moderate work 2-3 times a week, but he is worked pretty hard when he is ridden.

He is on pasture 24/7 but with the drought in Texas, we are just now getting green back in the pasture for the first time in 3 months, thank god for the rain!

He also gets feed twice a day (AM & PM)
Each feeding he gets....
1 "scoop" of oats (Its about 3/4 of a gallon jug)
1/2 cup of Omega Horseshine (recently added)
1 tblspoon of Canola Oil
2 tblspoons of Dynamite Pelleted Probiotic
also has a apple electrolyte added to his water, he doesn't like the texture of it in his feed.

he also had free choice of round bale 24/7, but now that is gone, so each feeding he gets about 3-4 flakes of hay

20 years old, grade paint, 1100-1200 lbs Typically is in moderate work 4-5 days a week. Right now is on light work 2-3 days a week. Still trying to add some weight and muscle so he gets fed the same. May add a few pounds of pelleted alfalfa for the night because he's stopped gaining weight. He may be at his max muscle because of age, but I would rather him put on a little more fat then keep him where he is at.

AM :
1 Flake Tiffany hay
1 Flake Alfalfa

PM :
1 Flake Tiffany Hay
1 Flake Alfalfa

4 Cups Strategy
2 Cups Rice Bran
1 Scoop Biotin (2oz)
1oz Next Level Joint Fluid

Quarter Horse 15.3hh mare now 24 y/o and in full retirement, been each other's since she was an 8 year old. She gets free choice high quality Bermuda Grass Hay twice daily plus 2 pound of customized mixed grain and pellet supplement twice daily am and pm. The only part of my mare that seems to be expressing her age is her face with the sunken area above her eyes. Otherwise, she looks far younger than her actual age.

16 yr old QH mare, 15 hh, 940 lbs (measured this morning!), moderate riding 4-5 days/week, on pasture, 2 lbs Purina senior & 2 flakes hay in evening, will get 2 flakes hay in a.m. too when winter comes

8 mo. old QH weanling colt, 12 hh, 380 lbs, measured this morning, in paddock with grass, plays & runs fences, 4 lbs Purina junior and all the hay he wants

I also just check to see that they look healthy and adjust feed accordingly. My mare had gained enough weight last year after I bought her so I reduced her grain. I feed her the senior feed just because it has things she needs for her age such as glucosamine. Thinking about feeding her some alfalfa this winter as someone told me it makes them want to drink more water.
