Is it dangerous to lunge your horse just prior to or just after feeding? Such as colic.

It's safer just to wait an hour-45 minutes.

From what I have learned, You let the horse cool down to a normal body temp before letting them eat or have excess amounts of water. So, I wouldn't do it. I always make sure that it's been an hour since feeding before putting any stress to the horse such as exercise and trailering

I usually wait 30-45 minutes after feeding to ride if I feed first, but normally I feed after I ride, so I ride him then hose him and make him wait 15 or 20 minutes while I clean stalls and what not. I feel his chest to make sure he's not hot and you also want to make sure the breathing is fine. But yours are babies arent they? so you probably are only longing for so long...

I do the same.

I try to adhere to the hour rule also. Since I feed at about 6:30 AM I ride afterward. I typically feed again at 4 PM except if I'm on a trail ride, of course, then it's when we get back and cooled off.

So ... Feed, wait, work (in the morning)
Work, wait, feed (in the afternoon)

Gosh, we feed late! Anywhere from 9:30-11:00... Yikes.

Horses have internal clocks, same as we do. When you miss a feeding, or are very late, their digestive juices have already started flowing and that's not a good thing. Haven't you been very late for dinner and your stomach lets you know?

I also weigh my feed since a scoop is pretty inaccurate and you could be off by a good deal. Notice that suggested feeding amounts on the label is by weight?

Anyway, that is the way I've done it for 30 years and there's been no data that tells me otherwise.

That was always a running joke between me and my old riding partner who fed when he got around to it and used a scoop because it was easier. (My horses always looked better and I fed less since they didn't have to worry about missing a meal )

Some horses are more prone to colic than others. That being said, I usually go out and feed hay, do the barn chores, then chase everyone away from the hay, and bring Ricci in. I spend a good twenty minutes brushing her and braiding her mane [she hates to get her mane and forelock in her ears!] and I tack up. She gets about three minutes on a loose rein, and then about ten minutes on our walk warm up. Then we get down to business. When we're cooling out, I bring her in when she is still just a teensy bit warm. I stretch her neck, her back, and her legs. It works wonders you wouldn't believe. Then I give her another good brushing and let her back out. So far there's been no problem. As long as they get ample time to warm up before strenuous activity, and plenty of time to cool down again, I think you're fine. Besides, they say people have to wait an hour to swim after eating, but that's a load of poo. =]
