Foundered beyond anything I have seen.

I posted the story under a different forum but I want this information available to everybody. I've got a horse here that was so close to being put down it is scary? Pappy foundered and nothing seem to be working so then. I had him tested for Lyme disease, which he tested positive. Ok, so now we are doctoring for that and he is getting worse.he was to the point of not being able to take a step. I told me husband to dig a hole because I just could not stand seeing this beautiful animal in such paint. Pain killers were not working after about three days. Mind you this is three weeks. Well, hubby remembered an old remedy from years back so we held off with what I knew was inevitable. I came in, mixed up a paste of Epsom sal, onion and garlic powder. We put it inside his boots ...when I went out the next morning I could not believe what I was seeing. Paps saw me and nickered and actually walked to me. It has been for days now,and he no longer pivots on his back legs to turn around and just steps right out. His hooves are showing improvement and he actually feeling good. Praise the Lord, he blesses us every day!!

Very interesting! Don't know about the onion & garlic, I think they're both very high in sulfur? But Epsom salts is magnesium, which is indeed helpful for hooves and laminitis/systemic hoof damage and reduction of inflammation. Never heard of it used in that way, or having such a fast, profound effect, and perhaps it was just coincidence, that the 'corner was turned'. But certainly warrants looking into further IMO, as a hoof care practitioner who specialises in rehab! I do know that magnesium sulphate(Epsom) & many other forms are not well absorbed through the gut, but are far more 'bioavailable' through the skin, and the beneficial effects of Mg are many, so this could be another promising 'treatment'.

All that said, sounds like your horse is in a dire way & this treatment will not have him 'out of the woods' - there is still probably a lot going on otherwise & could be just a short term improvement, so don't relax yet! If you'd like to post hoof pics for opinions, see the link in my signature below FIRST & best to start a thread in hoofcare section.
