Hair falling out???

This morning I noticed my older mare(about 18-20) had a patch on her hind quarters just near her tail dock that hair was actually falling out in big clumps. She is shedding at the moment but this is different, I could pull clumps of hair out if I wanted to.

I was wondering if anyone knew if this could be attached to some stomach or skin problem? I was also wondering if it would help to put M-T-G on it?
Please help I would really like to know whats wrong in case it leads to something worst.

Thank you

Is she rubbing at her tail area too?

When was she last wormed?
When was she last really cleaned in that area?
Could she possible have lice? It is prime season for them....

Those are some things I would quickly get answers to and then continue the search from there if all your answers are "No"...

Best of luck.

Sounds like a fungus or bacterial infection, possibly rain rot. Your vet can diagnose it and give you a treatment for it that may include oral antibiotics. It's very important not to share this horse's tack and grooming equipment with other horses. If your vet says it is an infection you should disinfect all of the things that have come in contact with her skin and keep them clean and disinfected on a regular basis.

A horse is a horse, of course!

Thank you for all of the help and information. I looked it up a bit and I never knew this but the horse is just shedding out and the new hair hasn't grown back yet.
