Hay out in the weather. How many of you keep it out?Just wondering how many of you gu

Just wondering how many of you guys keep it out in the weather but off the ground? I was gona do an open shed off the stable shed of about maybe 8x8 to put the hay under but I might just hold off and just keep it on pallets off the ground outside of the pasture area. Just wondering about it not being as fresh for the horse or does that even matter? I guess even the way i was gona do it it might of not have been as fresh exposed to moisture anyway right?

thoughts guys?

We have stored our hay outside before but it gets pretty nasty looking and theres a lot more waste. We built a hay barn a couple of years ago now all our hay is inside much better not so much wasted hay the horses wont eat.

We keep ours in a shed, but we leave some out by one of the pastures. It is on a pallet and covered by tarps so that it doesn't get any moisture on it.

It depends where you live. Some areas you can store it outside tarped and have very little waste and deterioration of quality while in other areas you've got to get it up before the first rain or it's ruined. I'll get hay all winter long that's stacked on the ground and the bottom bales are fine.

yeah the one thing i want to now for sure is if I build a top to cover it but the sides of the barn is open, will that even be helping the situation? It will be about an 8x5 or 8x6. I ask this because of the possibility of rain blowing in on it.

If i have to , i will probably cover the sides of the hay part as well but not sure how i will cover it. I don't want to use osb necessarily to cover it. I might use 1x4's or 1x6's or something. And Im in South Carolina by the way
