Hey! Just wondering what your tips and tricks are to get a horse to eat bute!! I have a very picky mare so I have been using molasses and so far...they have worked.

So, I'd love to hear what you guys do? :)

Brighteyes, bute can also come in pill form and I believe a powder. I buy the pill form from my vet and crush them into a powder. A food driven horse can be fooled a few times to eat it in some sweet feed or mixed into their daily supplements, others are pickier! I've heard of putting the crushed byte into some applesauce and squeezing it into the mouth with a syringe too.

Thats what they're doing with a horse at my lesson barn who cut open his leg. The crush up the bute, then mix it with applesauce and use a syringe to get it into his mouth. He usually eats all of it no problem.

Flinx, I mixed bute powder really well with water and honey in syringe and then just sprayed right into horse's mouth.

I use the pill and crush method then just sprinkle it on their normal feed. So far it's worked without a problem.

I have Bute in paste form but also have horse aspirin that is in powder form.

For the aspirin:

1. Mix a 50-50 amount of pure apple juice and water.

2. Put the powdered (or smashed tablets) in a big syringe.

3. Add 2cc's of the apple juice/water mix.

4. Dose the horse in the same manner as when dosing with tube wormer.

I have one horse that puts his head over the stall and waits. All I do is hold his chin up so the mix doesn't spill out of his mouth. He is a closet Wino, I 'm just sure of it:lol:

I have used both the pill form and crushed them and mixed in with a grain feeding. I found though that not all the crushed dosage was being eaten. So I then switched to the paste tube dosing. There are several doses in the tube paste form of Bute unlike a paste wormer which takes all of one tube for a 1200 pound horse.

I have a couple that are picky & would be easier to give the paste form, but a tube of paste is $25 for 20 grams I believe (its been ages since I use a tube) and a container of powder is only $5 more & has a 100 grams.

I mix it into organic applesauce and mix it in a small amt of feed. Never had one who refused.

Sounds like the majority of you use the apple sauce then. What I do is have a small amount of warm water and dissolve it in that and then mix it with the molasses...If that ever stops working ill have to try the applesauce :)

how much is the powdered form for the bute rather then the bottles of tablets? and how much is there?

Powder I pay $30 for 100 grams
Pills - $1\pill\gram
Paste - $25 tube (20 grams I think)

If you can use it by expiration, powder is the way to go! I have 11 horses so powder works for me as it generally gets used by exp, but if not its still cheaper even if I only use a third of it.
