How to encourage more water consumption

How can I encourage my horse to drink more water when winter time hits?
Should I add electrolytes to his feed or water?

Electrolytes would be my suggestion. If you clean your water buckets frequently (...which I would reccommend...), then you will be wasting your electrolytes when you dump out the dirtied water. That's why I mix mine with feed. Also, regarding brand, I REALLY like Quench. No artificial sweeteners or coloring.

Another way to encourage water consumption is to provide the horse with warm water. Whenever I'm at the barn in the winter, I fill a small (8-quart) bucket with warm water, mix in a capful of molasses, and let my horse go to town. You also obviously want to make sure that the temperature of the water in your horse's stall isn't too low. In the winter, this is obviously hard to regulate, but at least make sure it isn't ice water by providing your horse with a heated water bucket.
