How hot is too hot?

I was recently told that this summer was going to be record breaking in terms of temperatures, apparently in the high 30's low 40's (C). If that's the case, when would it be too hot to ride?

I live in Texas (southern US) and its always in the 90s-100s (F) and humid your 30s, 40s (C) and I ride when its in 30s (C) my 80-90s (F) but when its in the 40s (C) my 100s (F) I don't ride at all but our horses are used to that kind of weather because its like that all year round here

I think what your horses are used to is more important than the actual temperature. Last summer I spent 2 months in Austin, Texas and every time I rode *I* needed one of the big bottles of Gatorade, but the horse was fine, even though it was close to or above 100.

Back home in the Pacific NW, my horse is sweating in his stall as soon as it hits 85

If/when it starts getting unusually hot where you are, take it easy at first and let the horse tell you if its too much. Also, consider providing loose salt or top dressing the horses' feed with it during heat waves.

Up here in Illinois we usually ride until it gets 90. Much of the time when it's in the 90's we have a lot of humidity and that makes it ever hotter. Not bad if we ride on trails that are in forest preserve and the temp is about 5 to 10 degrees cooler.

If the temp is going to be that hot we will ride either in the very early morning or late evening when the temp is much lower.
