Jake and Heaves

My vet did an overall exam on Jake and found out his periodic coughing was due to COPD. I have done some research but I have many more questions than answers. Tonight I fed Jake his usual mash wetted down and he may cough once or twice, tonight he was doing a strangling kind of cough. Every mouthful led to some rough coughing so I took he feed away. I put him in a small enclosure and he stopped coughing. When contacted, the vet said I did right. Then I gave him two handfuls of hay amd he chewed those without a problem. Thinking back, he may have been bolting his feed.

Jake does not have a stall for the winter yet and there is a place nearby that has stalls. Is it better for him to be partially stalled? Anything else I should try? Thanks in advance!

I would not be stalling a horse with heaves they need to be outside 24/7.

I have a really successful environment for dealing with heaves. Horses are out 24/7/365. Hay is forked and spread out each feeding, 2Xs/day. NO feeders. NO round bales. NO stalls.

Owned & rode a gelding for 3 years and never suspected for a minute he had heaves. Sold him and 2 weeks later got a call about not disclosing the 'disability'. Vet told the buyer it was one of the worst cases he'd seen in 20+ years.

Was sad I'd sold him to such an ignorant old-school type. No way was she going to pull her excellent round bale system... Cause you know... Feeding 2 horses is SO much work.
