My farrier who is also my vet and dentist (soo nice!) was out doing my horses feet and Hank has been getting bumps on him. I thought they were just swollen bits from the danged horse flies out here but hes been getting more. He said Hank had hives. He gave him a shot to help it and prescribed some powder to put on his food every twelve hours. I think it was the fly spray we were using...is this a possibility? I discontinued the use of that spray and bought the bronco kind which he's been fine with before.

I really need to ride Hank because ever since I got another (younger) barrel horse for christmas I just dont have time for him...the only problem is is that he has some bumps right on his girth spot..

Is there anything else I can do to get them to go away along with the medication my vet gave me?

Thanks!

It could very well be. I sprayed off our old mare before a lesson yesterday and she hived up within five minutes in every spot the spray had contacted her. After the lesson, I gave her a bath and the welts went away.

Yes it sure can be the fly spray because that just happened to me two weeks ago.

How do I know that for sure? I only sprayed the bottom half of the horse and that's where he welted up:shock:

Funny Bronco is mentioned because it was Bronco that caused the welts on my horse- lol lol lol

I have used Bronco off and on for years but the company evidently has changed something in the "other ingredients" list.

My other horses were fine with the Bronco, but this particular horse started his dust/pollen/mold allergy symptoms sooner than usual, so I chalked it up to a combination of that and a change in ingredients.

The outbreak was minimal and this isn't my first hives rodeo, so I just treated him myself and he was completely over it in 72 hours.

This horse now gets sprayed with Zonk until they change something and his skin won't like it:?

I had a mare with very sensitive skin that reacted very badly to flyspary. Unfortunately, she also got massive welts from horseflies. They'd get all swollen and full of fluid. During summer I put her on garlic and apple cider vinegar, and switiched to a mix your own flyspray that consisted of just the peremethrin concentrate and water. It worked as well as the pricey stuff and eliminated the problem with hives. THe best part is it is only $10 for a bottle that makes probably about 50 qt-sized bottles. Since bronco, which doesn't work particularly well, costs about $10 for one qt, you can do the math. :)
