Please explain

I have a new horse a 5 yr old gelding in with my 7 yr old mare and 14 yr old gelding..
My question is why does my new gelding deliberately urinate on where my mare urinates..
Like when you watch dogs mark their territory as soon as another dog urinates..
What is the reason for this?

First off "Welcome" to the forum.......

Mother Nature is not all that different species to species........

One mare, two geldings and the "claim" to keep her is on.....

Marking their territory and covering her scent so others are not so aware of her existence...keeps her "his"....

In the wild, a stallion marks over his mares excrement as a warning to others that this band of girls is mine....

Domesticated horse or not the right of survival of the fittest, strongest, best fighter and provider still exists...
Same as the fight or flight mindset....

Some things never change..........

Have your horses not already had their hierarchy meeting of squeals, strikes & kicks, biting and run-offs???
Just another in the list of who is #1 on the totem-pole....
....
jmo...
