I need some advise.. I was invited to a poker ride for next weekend. I have a 30 year old mare with a heart of gold. She will do anything I ask of her. I want to go, but my mare isn't in the best of shape. I have only ridden her about 4 times this year. Every sence I had her she sweats really bad after riding. And she never really walks. Always prancing around wanting to go. Does anyone think I shouldn't ride her. This is a 3-4 hour ride. I am kind of worried about tying up or colic. She did colic really bad in 99'. I almost lost her.

Hi, Well poker is a card game normally played with gambling (money. ) We don't gamdle. You ride your horse from station to station and they give you a card at eack stop (5-7 stop) Who every has the best hand wins a prize. Hope that help. Now should I ride my mare that is out of shape?

Personally, I wouldn't. She sounds like out of shape, and the ride is really long (plus she's not young).

Deffenetly not young any more. It is about 3-4 ride and you have to walk. its the rules. But my mare really doesn't walk, she kinda prances all over. I have been doing some round work with her. to keep her from stocking up and getting stiff. But just really haven't worked worked her. Thank you everyone.

Well I did it. I rode her in the poker ride. And she did great. Infact I think I am more sore then she was. Girlie is doing great, she is not sore, and she still loves me. Me on the other hand, I can hardly sit down. I think I am more out of shape then she is.

Congrats on making the ride. The real question is did you get a good hand? Our saddle club has poker rides. We have many different types of horses in the club at different levels of training and a few Tenn. walkers that seem to not be able to slow down. No one cares if someone breaks away from the pack to run off a little energy during a ride. We have gone on some 5-6 hour rides and I know what you mean about sore. I always end up hanging my feet out of the sturrups by the end of the ride, and walking bowlegged after I'm done

No my hand was not very good, but it wasn't the worst either. My friend I went with got 3rd best hand and won $25.00. This was the first poker ride I have ever been on. It was great I will be going again. All the people were very helpfull, We were worried about my old mare not making it, but it ended up being my friends horse. She had to walk a lot, so all the other riders took turns walking her horse and my friend rode their horses. They even went as far as riding double so she had a horse to ride and her horse was ponied. It turned out that he had a cramp in his hip. After about a mile with no rider and kept him moving, she was able to finish the ride. It was awesome. I will diffenently go again. And my old mare looks better now then she did 2 weeks ago, She is more alert and she seems to be happier.
