Sickle Hocks
Fell in love with a horse, want to use him just for put-putting down the trail and around the arena...but he is sickle hocked. Warmblood schoolmaster.
He is very sound, no arthritis, nothing else other than those hocks. You can see it when he walks but you cant feel it when you ride, he doesnt trip or stumble.
He is 16, if I pick him up I think it will be good to put him on gluco/chondroitin but other than that I dont know a lot about sickle hocks.
Anyone have any info on sickle hocks they want to share?

I think it really depends on the severity of the fault. Horses with slight sickle hocks can lead very productive and athletic lives while those with severe sickle hocks are prone to issues with the soft tissues of the hock like bog spavin and thoroughpin. They are also prone to early arthritis. If you could get some pix and maybe video, it would help a lot. If you are able to, the best bet is to have the vet do a thorough PPE and ask some questions while he is looking at the horse.
Here is a good site that has some good info.

I will get some video and pics of him this week, I have him on trial this Tuesday til next Tuesday. Calling to set up the vet check today. Hopefully all will go well though.
