Question Tooth decay?

I just bought a 9 year old buckskin. The previous owners did not have his teeth floated for 3 years(although they claim they did) he has hooks in his mouth and sores which i will have the vet come out this week. As i was looking at his teeth, i saw that there was black hole with purple lining around it where is root canal is? How do they fix this? Is it curable? I think they root canal has decayed.. But I don't think horses can get root canals? Will they just pull it? I would Like to know what it is. And how to keep the pain to the min until the vet comes.

Horses that get to much sugar in there diet can get tooth decay. Sometimes the vet can grind it out. Other times the tooth has to come out. It could just be, he has a infection. You never know. The vet needs to get in there and take a look.
