Lower NSC alternative to Purina Healthy Edge

I've made just about every excuse in the book as to why my mare has been uppity, jittery and spooky. She used to be just as happy to walk on trail as to work. Last week she nearly bucked me off because I wouldn't let he canter!

First I thought it was moving barns. Then I chalked it up to having less turn out space. Then less work because of family issues and weather. After that it was the seasons changing. More recently it's been because she's fit now and has a lot of energy.

This whole time I've been under the impression that she's been getting 1lb of the Purine Stratagy Healthy Edge and 1lb of ration balancer. When I asked the BO it turns out she has been getting 3lbs of the PSHE!

She looks awesome, but riding her becoming more of a chore then fun. Over the past two days I rode her for 4 hours. She felt like she could have easily done 4 more! She 21, with navicular, I don't what her pushing herself like that!

I was thinking of swapping her to the Triple crown equine senior which is 11.7% NSC comparied to PSHE 19%. I also like that we will eat her meds with it since it's a textured feed. No blending peppermints into the pills.

Any other good options out there?

This was what she looked like a few weeks after bringing her back to work on only hay and ration balancer last year.

This was her last week on the Healthy Edge, and a years worth of work later! Excuse the dirtiness!

Look into Seminole Wellness brand. Did wonders on my 10 year old mare. look especially at the Herbal Wellness blend. It most certainly will not disappoint!

Also, your horse looks amazing for her age!
Good job on the upkeep!

She looks phenomenal. My rule of thumb is, if it's working that well, don't mess with it. You may just need to ride her more, not necessarily harder but just more.

Thank you!

Seminole isn't available in my area. We have Purina, nutrina, triple crown and poulin.

19% isn't a huge amount NSC and 3lbs isn't a lot of feed. I love Purina Ultium, it's 16% NSC but is higher fat so you would feed less and is tasty too. Triple Crown has a good rep but is expensive. Another option would be to do just the RB and supplement for weight as needed.

I agree the feed isn't the problem though it's a normal amount of a relatively low NSC feed. I can't find the ingredient list though.

aww man! too bad:(

I am a big supporter of Nutrena. I feed my horse The pro-force Fuel, and just switched to PF senior. Looks amaz-balls!
Have you tried any of the 4 pro-forces? Say hello to dapples, shiny, and best behaviors!

I have never tried TC, but I want to in the near future!

Quick question, what kind of meds are you giving her?
they are obviously doing a good job:)

I've been trying hard to not change it. I've made excuse after excuse for all her energy. And I wouldn't mind all the energy, except it's gotten to the point where she turns into a ticking time bomb under me.

I ride her as much as I can. I'm a nurse so I work 12 hour nights, 3-4 days a week depending on if I pick up overtime. I can't swing by for a quick ride before or after work. Typically I ride her 3-4 days a week then.

There are other things it could be too.

Just wanted to say I LOVE Poulin, definitely my go to feed I just don't mention it as it's localized. But while there are different feeds I like as a brand it's my favorite. TC has a great rep but is expensive (I know I already said that haha) and I've never actually used it. Poulin is used extensively in this area and it's what my own horses get atm (Etec One and Etec Low Starch Senior) but yeah previous comment still stands lol.

To my knowledge Triple crown is one of the best feeds on the market.

I'll look into the Nutrena feeds.

She's on Previcox and Isoxsuprine for her navicular. She's doing really, really, well. She's back at her baseline and the only time she is sore is after getting shoes put on. I think the banging irritates the area.

I did see that Poulin makes a low carb senior, but it's still higher in NSC, at 14.5%, then the textured senior TC (11.7%).
