Opinion on FSO vs. BOSS

I’m trying to decide between giving my guys flaxseed oil or black oil sunflower seeds. I’ve used FSO in the past and liked it pretty well. I just started them on BOSS because my feed store was out of FSO. In the past I’ve used wheat germ oil when they’ve been out of FSO as well. What is your opinion on that too?

Is there a reason to give any of those? As in, my horse shows he could use more Vitamin E or extra dietary fat or Omega complex?

I ask because I can fuss a lot about supplements but in the end, my horses do just fine on hay and graze plus a general vitamin/mineral supplement, except in winter (I live in New England) when I feed them extra calories to keep weight on in the cold, and salt mixed into their feed instead just free choice.

Whatever your reasons. —— no — just — NO! To feeding BOSS to a horse -

1. There are credible articles that discuss the excessively high Omega-6 in BOSS with zero ratio to the healthy (and much preferred) Omega-3 that flax offers.

High Omega-6 exacerbates any type of inflammation, especially metabolic issues.

2. Do you know the differences between the types of Black Oil Sunflower Seeds that are ALL designed for birds?

2.1. Do NOT feed striped sunflower seeds to horses.

2.2. Do NOT feed anything to a horse whereby the bag states the seeds have “bird kote” on them.

2.3. just don’t feed BOSS at all; wait for the flax to come in. I hate DuMor products but I would much rather see someone buy a bag of DuMor Omega-3 from TSC, than feed BOSS ———

I cannot believe we are 20-some years down the road from when people thought BOSS was the way to go, found it wasnt

Ditto

Is there a specific reason why you are wanting to add FSO or BOSS?

Coat shine? Weight gain?
