The mare is near the ranch I work on and is in a dry lot and fed hay. It's not as expensive as many places in the country and there's an abundance of quality pasture if you know where to find it. Some years we have very mild winters and horses can be on pasture almost the whole year and sometimes there's a lot of snow and a late spring and horses are fed for 5-6 months. I think good alfalfa hay is going for about $180 per ton.
