First show! I have some questions 😊

Hi there, Im going to my first show on Saturday, March 30. Im showing on a lesson horse at my barn, and I will be doing 2 divisions, walk trot canter and X-rails but I have a few questions.. What if the horse refuses? Do I try the jump again, and if so, how many times? Or do you just leave the ring or go to the next jump? Another question is, what if I forget a couple of jumps? Also, I usually carry a crop while riding, and only use it when the horse does not respond to multiple leg aids or refuses a jump, is it frowned upon to carry a crop in the show ring? Im very nervous and extra advice would be appreciated! 😊

Been many years since I was in the show ring but I'll answer with what I was taught ages ago...

I was taught circle and approach again... 3x refused you are done, disqualified.
Salute the judge and leave the ring.
If DQ, ask if you could do 1 x-rail to end on a positive that class...usually if not disruptive in time was allowed.

Or do you just leave the ring or go to the next jump?
See answer above...

Another question is, what if I forget a couple of jumps?
If you forget the course pattern you are DQ...
I found if I mentally rode the course, took my finger and traced the pattern I was able to know what and where to ride for the next fence and did not forget a fence.

Also, I usually carry a crop while riding, and only use it when the horse does not respond to multiple leg aids or refuses a jump, is it frowned upon to carry a crop in the show ring?
It is not frowned upon to carry a crop if carried properly.
It is a part of correct attire.
If you must use it, use it correctly...

Im very nervous and extra advice would be appreciated!
Take a deep breath and breathe...
Smile and remember this is supposed to be fun.
It is exciting to get dressed up and ride in your fine show clothes...
Ride to better yourself not only to get a ribbon...
Ribbons are nice, but to me knowing I just rode the best I could was prize enough.
Like I wrote above...been many a year since I went in the ring...
Once I figured out that it was no different to ride at home or at a "destination", aka show...the nerves stopped.
Riding to better me...that accomplishing my goal of fun and riding together was my prize nothing held me back.

Good luck in your show and do have fun!!

The worst day is instantly better when shared with my horse.....
