Smile Finding a First Bosal 101

I want to purchase a bosal and mecate set. Given that a rider needs to shape the bosal, what do you recommend for a decent, but reasonable first purchase? There are so many options out there - rawhide braided or twisted, cotton core (which I know is not traditional, but perhaps a good place to start?) The gear is for a wonderful retired cutting horse with a bit of an attitude.

Thank you.

I took a long time till I bought my bosal/hackamore set.

I didn't know a good brand either, but knew that the ones on Ebay weren't what I wanted.

I found one advertised in my Western Horseman magazine and decided to take a chance on that one. I put out the question on here and another forum and got a lot of favorable responses on it.

I just got it two weeks ago and love the quality.

I got the whole set, but, if I was to do it again I might just get their bosal and put on marine yacht rope reins instead of the horsehair reins that came with the set.

But, I may just end up liking the horsehair and would have missed the chance of knowing about it if I hadn't have gotten them.

Here is the website I ordered from. I ordered Special #2 for $149.00. It's made by Steve Guitron. Specials

In fact there was a post made by me just recently that has other great advice and they named some other good bosals.

I really like this site, they have good quality tack and competative prices. I would overlook the mechanical hackamores on this page but there are some really nice bosal sets. I particularly like the rope hackamores with the flat reins close to the bottom of the page. Hope this helps, good luck. :)
