Getting stains out of english saddle pads

A friend recently offered to let me use some of her large collection of saddle pads since she currently doesn't ride. A few of the lighter coloured ones have some pretty gross sweat stains on the underside, and two of the darker ones have some mystery stains on the outside. They've all been through a normal wash and dry cycle but didn't come clean. I did some googling and all I could find was to bleach them, but that wouldn't work as they're not white pads. And to pressure wash them, but I don't have access to a pressure washer.

Does anyone have some good methods for removing sweat stains? I don't ride at a barn with a dress code so the outside stains don't matter too much, I just want the sweat stains gone for the comfort of the horse.

If they are just stains, then they shouldn't affect the horse's comfort. If they are stiffened areas, then I'd wash in super hot water with lots of detergent, and a high agitation cycle. I would recommend a fragrance-free detergent. You will need to rinse it several times afterwards. Rinse until the water is clear, not bubbly.

There is a method called stripping clothing. That might work.

Its extra hot water, 1/3 cup of borax, 1/3 of a cup of arm and hammer super washing soap and then 1 tsp of tide powder.

You stir it all up, typically in your bathtub and let them soak for 4-6 hours. Make sure you stir or agitate the water every hour.

After that, throw them back in the washing machine and wash them again.

Hopefully that helps.
