Helmets -- HELP!

Charles Owen or IRH? IRH are the only helmets I like so far, but I hear that a lot of people like Charles Owens a lot. I will be showing Hunter Jumpers, some dressage probably, lots of flat classes (in my dressage saddle and HUS).

So if you say "Go IRH", which one and what color:

International ATH Riding Helmet - Dover Saddlery.

IRH XR9 Riding Helmet - Dover Saddlery.

International ATH Velveteen Helmet with Dial Fit System - Dover Saddlery.

International ATH Riding Helmet - Dover Saddlery.

IRH™ ATHS Riding Helmet - Dover Saddlery.

Now for Charles Owen:

Charles Owen JR8 Junior Riding Helmet - Dover Saddlery.
^^ Tis the only one I can afford, hehe.

I go to the tack store and try them on to see what I like. Nice helmets I usually buy at the store, not online.

Side note: Do you know how often your suposed to replace helmets? I have one from like 8 years ago. I only use it for shows and have never fallen on it.

I think every year or two..? But if you have a really bad fall in one then you should replace it. Im really bad about replacing helmets.... O.O

What color should I get my helmet in (either brand)? For the Charles Owen, black on black or black on grey? And for the IRH, black on black, black on clear, black on silver or black on grey? Haha.

I have the IRH ATHS in the black/black. Really like the harness on this particular helmet...very secure and attractive. I initially had a Troxel and just could not stand the harness on it.

I will say that even though it is vented quite nicely on the top, I find it uncomfortable to wear in really hot weather, and have recently purchased a Tipperary schooling helmet (covered in vents) for Summer use.

Cosmetically, the ATHS would be very suitable for rated HUS shows as well as lower level Dressage.

Charles Owens are MUCH more popular in the show ring and IMO generally a better made helmet.. They're a fantastic helmet buuuuuut different models fit differently. The JR8 is not a good fit for every head shape. They look laughably ridiculous on me, but the Wellington looks fabulous (sadly, the most expensive model). I would try some on and see what fits you the best.

As a person who has owned both the IRH and the Charles Owen Skull Cap, I can say that the CO is a better helmet all around. I love they way they fit. They don't make you feel like a mushroom head They sit exactly where they should on your head.

However, I did have my IRH for about four years and I competed in it a lot. But, it always felt too tight and didn't fit right. Something about the shape of my head and the make of the helmet didn't work. I've heard that with a lot of people.

Charles Owen all the way :)

I love love love love my CO AYR8. I originally wanted the JR8, but after a while decided the GR8 had a better harness. By the time I got to the tack store and tried on helmets the AYR8 was the one I wanted, more expensive, but it looks fab, and in the hot california weather has those awesome ventilators like the Speed Air.

But really, buy what fits your head!

Gordon Wright once told a student to take up swimming because he would never be a good rider, that rider was George Morris.
