I have many helmet questions...

i know there have probably been many a thread on the different helmet shapes, but i can't find any of them! At least, none that are useful to me!

Anyways...

Right now I've got an IRH helmet that i loveee...but...i think it's a little too small. Because every time I ride in it, by the end of my ride...my skull hurts...almost a headache...but like the actual skull...it's really hard to explain.

I was thinking that it's probably a size too small then? Or maybe my head is just messed up.

TO THE POINT. I got the Dover catalog yesterday, and they had a bunch of helmets on sale for pretty good!

I saw a CO JR8 (I believe?) for sale for $134.95, which is affordable if I wiggle some things around. And, it's really pretty! (sorry) And I was thinking, i could get one big enough to put my hair up into since it's really annoying to have it flapping around on my back.

So...my questions are:

- How does the shape of the JR8 relate to the shape of an IRH? Like, oval? more round? because the shape of the IRH fits my head perfectly. Or, close enough to be comfortable. Though I also rode in a Troxel for a year and had no problems..? I dunno whether I'm an oval or a roundie. I could go to a tack shop and try on the different shapes, but idk if any have the helmet in question.

- If the helmet size I have right now is 7 1/8 (I believe, I'd have to go check for certain), what size would I want to get?

- Would I go up a size so that I could easily fit my hair underneath? it's not that long now but I'm growing it out again and it's fairly thick...

I may add more things later...

Unfortunately the majority of your questions will not be answerable by a post! I can tell you though that if your current helmet is making your head hurt it is definitely too small and you need to get a new one! IRH's come in both regular (round) and long oval. I had an IRH that was a regular that fit well and CO's look hidous on me and don't fit well at all. I look like a huge bobble head! I've heard from several others too that they thought COs tend to be more oval. GPAs? Look fantastic. I find that most people with round heads like GPAs better (except for the Pro, which is long oval) Your size would depend on how tight your helmet is now (if its 1 or 2 sizes too small) and how much hair you have to put up. I usually only have to go up one size (1/8 in) to put my hair under, but my hair is shoulder length. Going to the tack shop and trying on as many helmets as you can in different sizes will probably be best because everyone's head is different and different brands fit differently. You definitely want the best fit possable. Hope that helps just a little bit!

I think it would be dangerous to buy a helmet in a size that only fits you properly if your hair is under it. If you dont like the feeling of your hair on your back try tying it in a low bun or putting it in a hair net.

I ride with my hair in a low bun or you could possibly try a plait but it sitting lower on your head, if you get what I mean?

It's pretty much required in several disciplines at shows to keep your hair under your helmet. It's not only safe but often expected. My show helmet is 1 size bigger then my schooling helmet so there's room for my hair.

I have the JR8.
I love it.
Its very comfortable, and fits really well.
The padding is kindof memory-foamy, so even though my helmet is snug without my hair in it, I can still fit a flat bun under it, because it just sinks into the foam, if you know what I mean?

I suppose it depends on how thick your hair is though.
Mine's on the thinner side.

I look like a bobble head in almost any helmet (My head is tiny - 6 5/8 and my face is "small" too)... but I don't think I look like tooo much of one in this helmet :p

helmet

If you fit the IRH than you will probobly not fit the CO. I had this problem when I went to buy a charles owen afrter having an IRH and absolutely none of the sizes fit properly. The GPA or another IRH would probobly be your best choice.

woops, i forgot about this thread! hehe.

manda - after some testing, i don't think i fit the IRH. i can feel a gap almost on either side of my head, but the front and back are super tight. aaaand GPA's are ridiculous in price, so there's no way I would ever get one. even if it did fit my head.

my hair is actually pretty short right now but it's thick and i'm growing it out, hence my confusion.

I think i'm just going to put it on my christmas list, and then go look at helmets (i don't know a place that would sell CO's though!) closer to then.

cheply - thanks for the info! my hair is thick but has a lot of layers so it's kinda thin..ugh i'm confusing myself now!

thanks, everyone! I think i'm going to stick to getting new leathers now and put a new helmet on hold.
