Well, back in the 90's when I was a die-hard hunter/jumper, polo wraps were not much more than THE accessory to have, in about 20 different colors. They are used to prevent rubs, cuts, and various minor injuries when riding.

Polos are more for support of tendons than to prevent cuts and scraps, thats more of a brushing boot type purpose.
