During the day in summer I use a Cashel Crusader long nose fly mask on my mare, who is very sensitive to flies! It works great, stays put securely, and is well made. She was tossing her head a lot during our last ride so I am going to order a Cashel Quiet Ride fly mask but am pondering whether to order a regular or long one. I think the long one would protect her nose more, of course, but I wonder if it would interfere at all with breathing since it ends right in front of the nostrils. Planning to put it on over her bridle...

TN, the Cashel Quiet Ride should not interfere with breathing at all :)

What brands do you prefer, and why?
i use: The super mask, i use this brand because it it has fleece around the edges, no ears, and it has a double lock enclosure.

Which brands do you dislike and why? i dislike any brand with fabric extending over the ears, for turnout. ( don't get me wrong its a great idea, but my horse will ALWAYS get his mask off it has ear on it; they may work fine for others.

What are the pros and cons to using a fly mask, in your opinion?

Pros are: they keep those nasty flies out of their eyes, and they prevent eye irritation from the flies. No cons.

Any additional comments:

I also use the cashel quiet ride (with ears and the part extending down to the nose) for those muggy summer rides. It works great!

I use these as well. They are fairly inexpensive and have lasted well for us. My gelding still has his from last summer and it is in great shape. My dogs got ahold of my mares and chewed it up so she needed a new one as well as the new pony. The baby doesn't have one because lets face it I just got a halter on her and I don't think there is anyway I am getting a fly mask on her right now. So I just wipe spray on her face.
