**Calling All ARIZONA People!!** Questions/Help

I need people that live in Arizona. My mother is moving to Tucson next Thursday from North Texas. She has been calling around to see if there is a suitable place to keep her horse at that is near Tucson but has yet to find one. Her horse does not do well in a stall! He has always been in the pasture 24/7. Right now he's on 35 open acres. If he's in a stall he paces and freaks so being stalled up is not an option, plus the places my mom has called on cost an arm and a leg and only do full care which is not needed. I told my mom that I would post on here to see if anyone knows anybody in the Tucson Arizona area that has some personal property that they are willing to board a 28 year old QH on or if there are any barns that do self care pasture board. Any help/leads would be greatly appreciated!

I would be shocked if you found any place. If you do, I expect it will be expensive. This is the land near Tucson:

To have a pasture, you would need irrigation. A few acres of irrigated pasture land would probably be expensive. I've never seen anyone offer a place like that for boarding horses. Maybe to the northwest in Marana, or to the south in Sonoita...

Also, Pima County (where Tucson is located) has become very anti-horse. The zoning rules for someone keeping a horse for pay differ from a private owner keeping their own horse on the property.

Good luck to you, but I expect it will be a difficult search.

Nobody does pasture or padock board with free choice hay? I figured there wouldnt be green grass but thought there would something more than stall. How are most horses kept? If you dont mind me asking how are yours kept?

I'm in phoenix, but pasture boarding does not exist here so I would guess Tucson is the same. Maybe you could try looking for a place with larger stalls? Most of the stalls here are the open mare motel style so the horses can look around and don't feel as trapped.

Mine are kept on my property in a corral. This was taken the day Cowboy arrived:

The 3 horses are now sharing a corral that is about 60 by 90 feet, with 3 shades. They are fed hay or hay pellets 3 times/day.

The picture below is from Pima County's aerial view of lots. None of the homes are mine, but 4 of the homes in this picture have horses. Their corrals all run about 60 feet across...

This is about 20 miles from Tucson. I think it is pretty typical of owners who have horses on their own property. It might be possible to find someone who would add a horse in with their own, but advertising that fact would open them up to additional zoning requirements from Pima County. Horses living in corrals, or in 12x24 or 20x30 pens is normal around here.

Thanks guys for the info. Wasnt what I was hoping to hear but the other option is him staying here in Texas with me and my family. He has been part of the family since I was 3 so there's no way hes being sold and with his age he probably wouldn't sell. My mom has prepared herself already to leave him here with us. :( I thought I'd inquire though.
