Here's my two cents: I was searching for a lease situation, and found something that seemed absolutely perfect. 125 dollars, all the riding I could want, BEAUTIFUL mountains in which to ride. Responsive, quiet horses. BUT one horse was emaciated and advanced in age, and the owners were still looking for someone to ride her (30+). One horse was three-legged lame and had been so for a month without vet care. One horse was about 75 lbs underweight and had duck feet, and the last horse, the only one I would have considered riding after looking at all the horses' conditions, was still fifty lbs underweight (minimum), and they were riding him in a gag bit. I COULD have ridden there. Sure. There was no way I would have felt comfortable doing so. Did I turn my back on those horses? Maybe. But horse people are often ugly and savage. It can get very unpleasant very fast, and the reality is that without clear and decided evidence of abuse, there is very little you can do.
