Exclamation Biggest. Scare Of. My. Life.

So, Labor Day. Holiday. Celebration trail ride. Fun, right?

Hehe. I don't think so.

Margo = Friend who graduated 2 years ago. Sweetest person in the world who adores hrses but has never ridden before.

Brittney Gorman = Friends from school.

Jeff Gorman = Brittney's dad.

Dianne Gorman = Brittney's mom.

Danny, Toby, Pretzel, Gypsy = The Gorman's horses.

So Mom and I decide we're gonna take Margo on a ride on Labor day because she's been wanting to go all summer. I gave Mom Jester to ride and Margo was gonna ride Rico, so if she got scared or if something happened Mom could pony her behind Jester since none of the others pony or be ponied.

I was riding Pretzel because Mom had my horse and Margo had Rico. I don't dare take Sally on the trail and Annie was at the trainers. Plus I'd ridden Pretzel before and I had her style down.

So, it mostly went okay at first. But Mind you, Rico likes to hop over logs instead of stepping over them. So ya know, Margo got into that rythym and was having fun with it. Rico was trained to jump beforehand and soon she was encouraging the jump, leaning forward and giving him the correct signals. I thought "Brilliant, maybe she can do hunter jumper or something if she gets into it." She was really good at it.

So, there was one fallen log and she was tired and didn't urge him this time. Well, Rico got his back legs caught in a branch and jumped and Margo lost balance and slipped. She got her foot stuck in the stirrup and was drug for a few feet before getting free and rolling headfirst down a hill and right underneath Jester and Mom. Of course Jester tried to step away but Margo caught his back foot in her ribs. I also saw his other back foot go right past her head and I thought for sure it had hit her. Rico took off and nearly ran into me, and Brittney was quicky enough to grab him before I could. So I got off and held Toby and Pretzel before swapping with her so I could calm my horse. I thought he had broken his back leg he was holding it and everytime I touched it he pinned his ears and he wanted to lie down really bad. But thank god eventually he put it down and walked fine. We just let him rest before going on again.

I looked back and found Margo shaken, sore, bruised, bloody, but OK. We flagged down a boat at the lake but she insisted she ride back so she wouldn't be afraid next time. I always admired her. I would've gone back for medical attention after a spill like that. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life. Even when I'm thrown I'm not that scared. So i moved back and we all swapped stories and Margo and I could not stop shaking or keep our teeth from chattering. But she was so cool about it. She has a hoofprint on her white tank top and said "I'll never wash this shirt now. I'm gonna hang it on my wall." XP

But honestly, I thought she was dead. All I saw was blood from her bloody nose and I remember seeing the hoof near her head when Jester moved off. Thank god Jester didn't spook. If he had jumped and came down on her instead of stepping away....I'm not sure I want to think about what could've happened. She was so lucky. I've seen people die from accidents like that.

So yeah...That's my Labor Day story....

Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.

What a terrifying first ride for poor Margo. I'm glad to hear that everyone was ok after all that commotion. It's really good that Margo decided to ride probably would have left a lot of fear in her heart had she not. What a brave girl....we all know how tough that can be!
