Woohoo, so I went back up to NSW for a few days and I took Brock out on a trail ride yesterday! We went with his new owner (riding her other gelding Benji) and her friend and her sensible older trail mare Scarlet. We were originally going to take them on a longer trail but it's pretty hilly and we weren't sure Brock was fit enough (being a lazy boy). Instead we headed out behind her property where there's a paddock about 25ha of grass and some light bushland owned by her landlady.
Brocky had a bit of a freak out when we were about to start out (not sure what about) and threatened to buck so I just grabbed one rein and held him, until the friend brought Scarlet over and he got distracted by female presence
After a few seconds he relaxed and we headed out.
Neither Brock nor Benji had been out in the back paddock before so it was all a bit new for them, but Brock dealt with it all like a pro. We had kids appear at us out of the trees, a huge rusted old crane to pass, cows over the fence and goods trains honking as they went past, but Brock was fine for the whole ride. All the horses took turns at leading and we ran them a few simple tests by getting them to separate - all of them were fine about going solo, leading or following. We were out there for about 45 minutes - we were going to do another loop but decided to end it on a good note.
All in all it was an incredibly successful first trail out!
