Unhappy Bucket Bandits

I have a recurring issue of people stealing my horses' water buckets. It hadn't happened again in awhile, but this past weekend one of my mare's buckets went missing. So my question is, does anyone have any ideas on how to permanantly put a name on buckets outside of permanant markers? With permanant markers it never fails after washing buckets it always wears off or you just take your fingernail to it and poof!

And I know they're not all that expensive to replace, but I don't think that I should have to. So let's get creative here, people lol. Cheap and effective ways to permanantly put you or your horse's name on a bucket or personalize it to know it's your's.

Use a soldering iron to melt your initials (or whatever) into the plastic.

Bright obnoxious colored buckets that nobody else has. Flourescent pink buckets in a very conservative barn NEVER went missing!

Thanks for the replies!

Melting it into the bucket is a good idea, I'll have to check with a family member to see if they have some kind of tool that would work to do it. I'd also thought of engraving them, but wasn't sure how well that would work either or if it would just end up looking like scratches.

I was thinking about spray painting something on there, but I wasn't sure how it would hold up to scrubbing.

And Delfina, I'm pretty sure there's every color under the sun in this barn. I know for a fact there's neon pink, lime green, and orange. And I want there to be a definite way to prove they're mine.

Ear tag pens. They are meant for plastic and it doesn't fade or come off.

How about an ear tag punched into the bucket near the top (so as not create a leak) - would they be tough enough to go through the material (assuming either a rubber or heavy plastic bucket)?

CowChick - Thanks so much! That would be perfect, I don't think that would have ever hit me lol.

Chevaux - That would be a good idea, too, the buckets are the typical heavy plastic, 5 gallon type.

Get metal dog tags with your horse's name on it. Take a small butane torch to heat it up real good then stick it to the bucket til it melts itself into the plastic and leave it. You now have a personalized bucket that no one else has.

Those combination bike locks will ensure your bucket will be right where you leave it. Maybe let the BO know the problem and the combo, just in case.
